The Tús Initiative was established by County Wexford Partnership in 1998 in response to the needs of smallholder farmers in County Wexford.

The broad criteria used to define smallholders in County Wexford are:

	Families whose income is derived mainly from farming
	Farming households with incomes less than €18,000
	Farm size typically 30 – 40 hectares

The Programme has been working with smallholders and their families since 1998 and help and support is being delivered to increasing numbers annually through one to one mediation, group work and interagency coordination and referral. To date over 400 individual smallholders have availed of the service, many on a routine and repeat basis. A further 200 approximately have benefited through group and training activities run by the Programme.
